Constellate

The Tree

Rose Henbest

We parked beneath the tree

clambered out of the rented Kia Rio

a negotiation of limbs

and beheld.

Mum was sure this was majesty

we hadn’t seen before.

We looked up and up and up.

We joined hands

like we always did at mealtimes

my brothers complaining

my hands already sticky and

how was that possible

if we hadn’t eaten yet?

Mum shushed us.

We joined hands

but the tree was taller and wider and

greater than us.
