Doris A Googoo
Kwe’, my name is Doris Googoo, and I am a Senior Lecturer and Mi’kmaw Language Instructor at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). I was born on the beautiful island of Unama’ki (Cape Breton Island), and I live in We’koqma’q and Charlottetown.
In We’koqma’q, I am surrounded by my family, cousins, and friends including my beautiful grandchildren, who bring great joy and inspiration into my life. In Charlottetown, I am surrounded by UPEI students and IKERAS colleagues—my second family—who share the same mission and commitment to learning, teaching, and language revitalization.
I have been teaching for over 30 years, sharing the Mi’kmaw language and Indigenous cultural teachings. I am honoured to work with UPEI students and to support the learning and revitalization of our Mi’kmaw language and cultural ways. This work aligns with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action for Indigenous Languages (Calls 13–17).
Bringing people together through language—whether in the classroom or in community workshops—is a powerful and meaningful experience. I believe teaching and learning are lifelong journeys, and when we work together, we can strengthen the Mi’kmaw language for future generations.
