(2021) found that reviewers used these words to describe good infographics: \u201c<em>clear, clean, easy to use, calm and straightforward<\/em>\u201d; these for average ones: \u201c<em>effective, clear, straightforward, accessible and easy to use<\/em>\u201d; and these for poor ones: \u201c<em>dated, overwhelming, hard to use, confusing and ineffective<\/em>\u201d.<sup>42<\/sup>\r\n\r\nDunlap and Lowenthal (2016), writing for design expert learners, wrote that visuals are powerful for human learning when they effectively use visual organization and structure to reflect relationships, describe how parts of the whole interact, and reveal the storyline.<sup>2<\/sup> They noted that infographic effectiveness is influenced by how pleasing it is to view, how easy it is to read, and how well it achieves the objectives. They wrote that an infographic succeeds when it \u201cefficiently, precisely, and clearly conveys abstract ideas and complex and dense content that would otherwise require a lengthy narrative\u201d.\r\n\r\nButdisuwan et al. (2024) identified key design elements for successful dissemination of research infographics among health professionals, from most to least frequent:<sup>6<\/sup>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Clear and concise content.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Engaging visuals and graphics.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Effective data visualisation techniques.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Use of appropriate colour schemes and fonts.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Incorporation of relevant charts, graphs, or diagrams.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Attention to design principles and aesthetics.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Alignment with the target audience\u2019s preferences and needs.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Proper use of hierarchy and visual organisation to guide the viewer\u2019s attention.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li>The consistent and cohesive visual style throughout the infographic.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Incorporation of storytelling elements to make the information more relatable and memorable.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"><\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<div>Lang offered this list for characteristics of good infographics:<sup>27<\/sup><\/div>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Easily accessible.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Appropriate for patients\u2019 needs.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Easily understood.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Compatible with patients\u2019 values and lifestyles.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Compatible with other information give to patient.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Easily remembered.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Easily referenced.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Visually appealing.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Efficiently and economically prepared.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<div>\r\n\r\nA study of infographics used to disseminate research findings found that many did not provide sufficient information for readers to fully interpret study findings.<sup>43<\/sup>\u00a0Most described the population, intervention, comparator and outcomes, but many did not provide enough information on those issues. Bias risks and conflicts of interest were rarely disclosed in the infographics.\r\n\r\nA study of the design of infographics for clinical practice guidelines found that general practitioners considered them useful.<sup>44<\/sup>\u00a0However, the study also found problematic use of complex scales and technical terminology in evidence appraisal.
